The post below does not address the issues raised in the comments below. There is no question that the nun who runs the centre uses physical force on the students. I suppose one could claim this is her right as per freedom of religion (as there was historic physicality in almost all religious orders---however for the past generation I think it fair to say as a collective society we are trying to beyond violence as a way to solve problems). In fact the "slap practice" is putting it mildly since much of the physicality goes well beyond slaps. It is such a sad situation and not hard to see why she still has some followers. The nun is extraordinarily talented and may well have been able to change the world had she stayed away from a lot of this nonsense. In any event, be well.

The Tengye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Centre is an organization to be avoided. The website "Exposing a cult in Toronto" should be viewed by all who consider attending. The leader, Tenzin Kalsang, uses dangerous methods to supposedly treat the minds of others. There is a significant amount of physical abuse of residents and students of the Centre at the hands of Kalsang. Residents generally sleep no more than 3-5 hours per night and are forced to work extensive hours on, in the past, the dog kennell, and now the cat kennell. The organization is now based out of 9 Larkin Avenue in Toronto. It is being turned into a full blown cat kennel as students continue to flee. Other posters are correct. It is a total tragedy. The leader, Ms. Kalsang, had some valuable insights, but she has lost her way. It is time for the organization to be disbanded and for a detailed investigation to be launched into its finances.

The Tengye Ling Buddhist Temple is a fascinating organization. The leader likely started with the best of intentions but the organization is in serious trouble. At issue is the guru's belief that a "slap practice" will "wake up" students in the West. Given that in the West we consider this domestic violence, this was not the most logical direction for the guru to go in. Residents in the past were expected to turn over all of their money to be 100 percent controlled by the guru. Also at issue is the guru's decision to turn the organization into a dog and now cat kennel. Very sad. The organization is most definitely a cult and should be avoided.

The Tengye Ling Temple has been implicated in cult activity and should be avoided at all costs. This includes physical assaults on students by the guru such as front hand slaps, twin double thigh hand pounds, objects being thrown at students etc. While this guru is extraordinarily talented and has many valuable insights, she has completely lost her way. The guru of this Temple is dangerously mentally ill. Beware at all costs. See the website "Exposing a cult in Toronto".
